Hot Gossip > Google 'prefers' old sites to new
This applies to websites going live for the first time on the web, i.e. with a new domain registered for them. Generally speaking, it takes longer for Google to recognise and index a brand new domain.
If you have two domains abc.co.nz and xyz.co.nz which have identical optimisation applied with abc.co.nz being older than xyz.co.nz the chances are very high that abc.com will rank higher than xyz.co.nz.
How this effects redesigns
If redesigns are not done correctly, they can hamper site rankings.
Basic guidelines on re-designs are as follows:
- Retain old page names (case-sensitive and with same extension)
- Make only changes to content where it is required
- Always seek SEO consultancy when doing a redesign, because every site is unique!
- Redesign can be used advantageously on search engines. (e.g. with faster loading pages, placement of <h1> tags and other sub headings)
- Retain all <meta> information - such as <title>, keywords and description exactly as it was on the site before the redesign. This applies to every page of the website.
