Hot Gossip >The 2007 Marketing Wisdom Report

One of the best things to come out of 2006 from a marketing perspective has to be the “Marketing Wisdom for 2007” report. Compiled by Marketing Sherpa, this report features 110 real-life marketing tips and experiences from marketers and agencies worldwide.

Even better is that it is a free report, and we have included the download link for the full report at the end of this article.

This is the 5th annual report of its kind, and the editor, Tad Clarke, summarises three major trends as follows:

  1. Simple things can bring big returns.
  2. The emergence of social networks as a marketing tool (such as YouTube, blogs, forums)
  3. In this electronic age, the personal touch still holds true.

In this newsletter we have highlighted a selection top tips that you can try with your own marketing, but we encourage you to download and read the full report.

Email Campaigns:

Tip 2:

Test different subject lines with small groups of recipients before sending out your e-newsletter to your full list. Measure the most successful by tracking ‘opens’ and ‘click throughs’.

Tip 6:
Send the same email a week or two later with a different subject line to those recipients who did not open it the first. This can increase clickthroughs/sales.

Tip 11:
Emailing positive news can reduce ‘unsubscribes’.

Search Engine Marketing

Tip 46:
State your most important decision-making factors in your PPC ads (i.e. the bottom line such as price or availability) to generate highly qualified leads and not waste budget on tyre kickers.

Tip 50:
Buying keywords in the form of domain names for your PPC campaign can be a cheaper and effective way to gain traffic.

Tip 51:
Use your keywords in your PPC ads rather than your company name. Buyers care more about what you can do for them rather than who you are.

Social Networks

Tip 23:
Making the full transcript of a podcast available can increase the number of streaming listens.

Tip 27:
Commenting, emailing and chatting with bloggers in your niche can draw traffic and links to your website.

Tip 30:
A simple short email about your product to dedicated blog editors can greatly increase awareness, response and alliances.

Tip 61:
Gain inbound links for your website by writing an article that is truly valuable to your customers then contact bloggers to let them know about it.

Websites

Tip 76:
Make sure your website reflects your other marketing messages. Examine all ‘touch points’ of a campaign to be sure all messages are consistent.

Tip 80:
Every new idea deserves a chance and should be tested thoroughly. It is not always a straightforward conclusion, but the only way to find out their potential value.

Marketing

Tip 84:
Respond quickly to an enquiry when you are still fresh in a prospect’s mind to increase your chances of getting the prospect into the sales funnel.

Tip 88:
Offer prospects something they want and value by putting yourself in their shoes.

Tip 93:
Personalised and authentic messages resonate. Duh!

Tip 110:
Be careful about the brand promises you make, if they aren’t backed up by the right behaviours in the rest of your organization, more damage is done than saying nothing at all.
